Woman Dead in Shooting at Delta Maintenance Facility

ATLANTA -- A woman who authorities believe was looking for a Delta Air Lines employee outside a maintenance facility near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday.

Clayton Police Lt. Tina Daniel says police believe the woman sought to confront a Delta employee at the Delta Technical Operations Center. She says the woman was stopped by police at a security checkpoint outside the facility, where workers maintain Delta's fleet.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead says GBI is investigating. Authorities said they found that the woman had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Daniel would not describe the relationship between the woman and the Delta employee. It was unclear Monday afternoon if the woman was armed.

In a statement, Delta says no Delta employees were injured.

The facility is down the road from the main entrance to Delta's headquarters.

August is National Minority Donor Awareness Month

Today in the U.S., there are more than 86 million registered organ, eye, and tissue donors who have made the decision to improve and even give life to others. In Georgia, 3,487,019 individuals are registered organ donors. However, more than 100,000 individuals still die each year awaiting a life-saving organ. Some of the reasons for this disparity lie in the complexities of the qualifications required to be a transplant donor. Not every designated donor is eligible to donate organs at the time of death. There are three types of donation that can occur: organ, tissue, and corneal donation.
