New international terminal to open May 16 | Business
ATLANTA (WXIA) -- The new international terminal at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is slated to open May 16.
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed made the announcement at a Tuesday morning news conference.
"The opening of the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal is a major milestone for Hartsfield-Jackson airport and the City of Atlanta," Reed said. "The international terminal will strengthen Atlanta's position as the capital of the southeast and a vital global gateway for the United States. Our city has long been a preferred destination for international business and tourism, and I look forward to May 16 when we greet travelers from around the world in this new, state-of-the-art terminal."
Also in the news conference, the mayor says the airport would be hiring about 1,000 workers for concessions for the new terminal right away.
The new terminal will eliminate the need for international passengers passing through Atlanta to recheck their baggage. Passengers will be able to get to the new terminal from I-75 at Exit 239.
Construction on the 12 gate terminal began in the summer of 2008.
