Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market begins 2012 season June 13 with 2 mobile units

ATLANTA -- On Wednesday, June 13, 2012, Fulton County Cooperative Extension kicked off its second season and rolled out two mobile units to expand the service areas of the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market program.

The Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market 2012 Season will run from June 13 until September 12.

The addition of a second mobile unit allows Cooperative Extension to assist more residents with making healthier choices to live healthier lives.  The Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market program is provided at no cost to residents.  The program provides fresh produce and nutrition education to residents living in communities identified as “food deserts,” which are large geographic areas where mainstream grocery stores are scarce or missing.

The program is always in need of several items, including:

* Sandwich bread
* Individual bags of chips, pretzels, cracker, trail mix, etc.
* Individual fresh fruit or bags of fruit snacks
* Water bottles and juice boxes
* Sliced cheese, ham and bologna
* Ziploc sandwich bags
* Brown paper lunch bags

1st Annual Cascade 5K Run/Walk, Saturday May 19th, Benefits Midwest Cascade Area

"What's Happenin' in SWAT (SW ATL)..." Did you know... The 1st Annual Cascade 5K Run / Walk, sponsored by Neighborhood Planning Unit-Q (NPU-Q), takes place Saturday, May 19th at 8:30 a.m. 

The Cascade 5K is designed to provide a fun, healthy Saturday morning that encourage residents to become more involved with NPU-Q through the building of unity and pride in the Midwest Cascade neighborhood of SW ATL.  It is a FREE event limited to 100 participants of all ages.

The Cascade 5K run/walk starts at the Quailty Living Senior Services Center at 4001 Danforth Road and proceeds down Danforth Road to New Hope.  At New Hope Road it turns right onto Cascade Road proceeds down Cascade back to Danforth Road and ends at QLS.

The event winds through the beautiful Midwest Cascade neighborhood of SW ATL and will be a fun and healthy event for all ages.

ATLANTA -- You have seen them on NBC television network reality series “America’s Got Talent” and if you are a reality-show junkie, you remember them sharing  their high-energy dance experience with singer/songwriter Kandi Burruss and Attorney Phaedra Parks in connection with their travels to South Africa on BRAVO cable network top-rated reality series “Real Housewives of Atlanta”.

Now, the 19-year Atlanta-based ensemble GIWAYEN MATA, is going  to bring their ‘contagious’ high energy drum and dance to the Southwest Arts Center for Father's Day. Between educating audiences about African traditions and breaking barriers as an all-sistah ensemble in a male dominated percussion industry, its no wonder Creative Loafing Magazine named them "Best Local World Music Act" three times!

Children of Conservation is once again giving Atlanta residents the opportunity to save at some of the city’s top restaurants while also supporting an important cause. The non-profit organization known for providing an otherwise unavailable education to children of wildlife sanctuary workers in Africa is teaming up with over 85 local restaurants in all areas of Atlanta for its second annual Dinner & A Cause Card fundraiser.

Atlanta Braves recognize that you’re “Never too Old to Play” through the donation of 200 tickets to Fulton County Senior Multipurpose Facilities

The month of May is when the nation honors older Americans and the theme for 2012 —Never Too Old to Play!— recognizes the value that older adults continue to bring to our communities through spirited participation in social and faith groups, service organizations, and other activities. Throughout May, Fulton County will shine the spotlight on the important role older adults play in our community.  The celebration officially begins May 2, when the Fulton County Board of Commissioners issues a proclamation honoring senior adults living in Fulton County.

Residents with formalwear collecting dust in the closet urged to donate

The Housing Authority of Fulton County (HAFC) and the Resident Advisory Board (RAB) are sponsoring the 3rd Annual Prom Closet Program.  HAFC is seeking donations of gently used and clean prom/formal dresses and tuxedoes of all sizes for high school seniors graduating in May 2012.  The donated formal wear will allow young men and women without the financial resources to purchase a tuxedo or dress to choose a free outfit with accessories. Priority will be given to Housing Authority of Fulton County residents.
