Police officer hurt after suspect rams cruiser

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- A Fulton County police officer was one of two people injured when a suspect rammed a stolen car into a cruiser in a Walmart parking lot.

It happened at around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday outside the Walmart Supercenter at Old National Highway and Flat Shoals Road.

The injured officer was originally dispatched to the Walmart to take a shoplifting suspect into custody, according to Fulton County Police Det. Melissa Parker.

As the officer drove through the Walmart parking lot with the suspect in the back of his cruiser, the driver of a stolen car pulled out of a nearby gas station.

Parker said the suspect in the stolen car apparently thought the police officer had arrived to arrest him. He rammed the stolen car head-on into the officer's cruiser, then jumped out of the car and ran away.

The police officer and the shoplifting suspect were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately known.

Police have not yet identified or captured the suspect who drove the stolen car.
