GBI: Trucker turned semi toward police before being fired upon

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is working to find out more about an officer involved shooting involving a truck driver on Saturday night.

The incident happened on Old National Highway in College Park officials said.

Preliminary information shows that four officers noticed suspicious activity from a truck driver, later identified as 46-year-old Yahya Nalm Shakur.

Police said that Shakur was "operating the semi-trailer in an unsafe manner" but did not elaborate on exactly what got their attention.

The statement from the GBI said that police ordered Shakur to stop and that he refused instead turning the large vehicle toward the officers. 

Officers responded by firing at the wheels and engine of the truck. Officers later used a taser to remove Shakur from the truck but, according to the preliminary report, he was not shot.

Kennesaw man killed in police pursuit

COLLEGE PARK, GA (WXIA) -- A 32-year-old Kennesaw man was killed late Friday afternoon when he was ejected from the Ford F-350 he was driving crashed during a police pursuit.

Deputies from the Fulton County Sheriff's Office tried to conduct a traffic stop on the 2004 F-350. When the driver, Jonathan Fowler of Kennesaw, did not stop, a chase ensued. The Georgia State Patrol was contacted to assist Fulton County Deputies with the pursuit. 

The chase ended on Roosevelt Highway at Leslie Drive when GSP troopers performed a PIT maneuver on Fowler's truck. Fowler was ejected from the truck and died at the scene of the wreck. 

The Georgia State Patrol's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team and the DPS Office of Professional Standards is conducting a follow-up investigation.

$10K reward offered in crash that killed young children, grandmother

COLLEGE PARK -- Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta is now offering a massive reward for information on the wreck that killed a grandmother and two young children after a police chase on Sunday.

Suspect recovering after officer-involved shooting

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -- A robbery suspect is recovering in the hospital after being shot by a College Park police officer early Monday morning.

College park Police Chief Kieth Meadows said two officers were flagged down in the area of 2450 Old National Parkway, near the Baymont Inn and were advised that they had been robbed by three men. 

The officers spotted three men and tried to apprehend  them. That's when they say shots were fired by the officers and one suspect was hit in the arm and leg with what are believed to be non-life threatening wounds. 

Neither the officers involved, nor the other two suspects were injured.

The suspect who was shot was transported to the hospital, the other two were taken into custody.  

College Park police will investigate the armed robbery, while the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will take over the investigation of the officer-involved shooting. 

Clayton County PD captures sexual assault suspect

COLLEGE PARK, GA (WXIA) -- Clayton County Police said Friday evening that they have caught the suspect in a November 30 sexual assault. Investigators said the suspect had sexually assaulted a woman in front of her child.

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -- Police are searching for a man who sexually assaulted a woman at gunpoint in front of her child. 

Clayton County Police say the assault happened November 30th inside the woman's car at the Stonebrook Apartments on Norman Drive. 

Police obtained security video from a nearby Circle K showing the man identified by the victim.

South Fulton teen accidentally shoots mother in neck

FULTON COUNTY -- Police said a mother is in stable condition after being shot in the neck by her son.

According to Fulton County Police Detective Melissa Parker the shooting appeared to be accidental. The boy said he found the gun in a park and thought it was a toy. 

The boy was charged with Aggravated Assault. The condition of the mother is not known. 


Suspect caught after College Park officer-involved shooting

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -- A suspect is in custody after an officer-involved shooting in College Park Friday afternoon.

Police were responding to a domestic call at around 2:30 p.m. and arrived to find a man running from the house who matched the description the complainant described.

Officers then gave chase to the man on foot. Police said the suspect turned toward the officer with a gun.

The officer then fired but missed, police chief Keith Meadows said. Eventually the suspect was apprehended and now faces charges that include aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and theft by receiving a stolen firearm.

Police said the gun was stolen out of Clayton County.

College Park apartment fire displaces 8 families

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. – Eight families were displaced after a fire at a College Park apartment complex early Sunday.

The fire happened at the Old Town Villas on Godby Road. About seven units were families.

The Red Cross is assisting victims of the fire. Families are being provided food, clothes and a temporary place to stay.

1 shot at MARTA station in College Park

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -- One person was shot at the MARTA station in College Park on Tuesday, according to MARTA officials.

According to MARTA spokesperson Lyle Harris, the shooting happened after two men got into an argument around 1:50 p.m. at the station located at 3800 East Main Street.

The victim, who was conscious and alert, was transported to an area hospital.

Sherodrick Cheeley was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm or knife during commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies. He is being held at Fulton County Jail.
