Conference to address 21st century parenting challenges

ATLANTA -- Fulton County parents can take advantage of a Saturday, Nov. 9 conference designed to connect them with information and resources required for successful parenting in the 21st century.

The conference, entitled "Connecting 21st Century Parents to Information and Resources," begins with registration at 8 a.m. in the Georgia International Convention Center located at 2000 Convention Center Concourse. Conference sessions facilitated by the Housing and Human Services Department, Office of Children and Youth begin at 10 a.m. and end at 4 p.m.

The event offers free childcare for parents of children between 2 and 12 years old. District 7 Commissioner Williams “Bill” Edwards created the conference concept to help parents to build strong, safe and successful futures for their children. The conference is supported by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners.

Issues facing today’s parents include the use of social media, which can mean potential dangers to children when used inappropriately.  Additionally, parents who find themselves in the midst of the Juvenile Court system can learn about their children’s rights and juvenile law.

Parents who also want to learn about the best education resources available for their children will learn how to navigate the school system and prepare their children for job training and careers.  Additionally, adequate financial planning will help parents to prepare for their children’s future higher education.

Exhibitors, many with free resources, will provide information and education.  Participants can also expect to enjoy entertainment, food and door prizes. The conference is free to all Fulton County residents.

Citizens in need of reasonable accommodations due to a disability including communications in an alternative format should contact Nell Kapple in the Department of Housing and Human Services at (404) 613-7944. For Georgia Relay Access, dial 711
