Tavis Smiley & Cornel West stop for their "Poverty Tour" & visit Atlanta’s Urban Organic Farm

Tavis Smiley & Cornel West stop for their "Poverty Tour" & visit Atlanta’s Urban Organic Farm

Old 4th Ward --  Talk show host Tavis Smiley and professor/author Cornel West will be in Atlanta on August 11 as part of a 15-city "Poverty Tour" to bring attention to the issues facing poor people in the United States. They will visit Truly Living Well Center for Natural Urban Agriculture (TLW) in Atlanta’s old Fourth Ward as part of their tour because of the organization’s unique urban development plan.

Truly Living Well Center for Natural Urban Agriculture represents a new and innovative way to get fresh food to inner city residents while creating jobs and educational tools. Founded by former U.S. Agriculture Department Under Secretary Rashid Nuri, TLW has four sites in the inner city of Atlanta each growing organic vegetable and fruits. Along with the 100% organic food production, TLW. works to engage the community in gaining a better understanding of food and its role in better health and community development.

Ticket Lottery to the upcoming Antique Roadshow in Atlanta

Inman Park --  As you may know by now, the Antique Roadshow is rolling into town next month to let us all know if that old family heirloom that our parents have been holding onto forever is actually worth a large chunk of money or not.  As you can imagine the Atlanta stop is highly anticipated and tickets are scarce.  So our neighborhood Councilman Kwanza Hall is raffling off of few tickets for the community.

Summer in Georgia & peaches for weeks: What to do with those sweet GA peaches

Summer in Georgia & peaches for weeks: What to do with those sweet GA peaches

Atlanta, GA --  The blog Running With Tweezers has a great article including a variety of great recipes for this year's peaches.  If you have had one of this year's peaches you know they are just delicious!!!  Whether you want to make ice cream, a cake or a cobbler, @RunningWithTweezers.com has the perfect recipe for you.

Around here, we’re really fortunate to have summers full of local peaches. Growing up, they were one of my dad’s favorite foods and they made appearances at our house fairly regularly. Sliced on pound cake or angel food cake, on top of cottage cheese the old school way. In the colder months, he’d even eat canned peaches straight up with a spoon. While I’m not a proponent of the tinned variety, I’m a huge fan of the fresh ones grown here in the South.

Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market to Hit the Road June 8th

ATLANTA -- "What's Happenin' in SWAT (SW ATL)..." Did you know...  Fulton County Cooperative Extension will operate the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market, every second and fourth Wednesday, to provide nutrition training and deliver seasonal fresh fruits & vegetables from local farmers to residents, where mainstream grocery stores are scarce or missing.

In a continued effort to address health disparities in Fulton County, the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market has been created to deliver fresh produce from local farmers to residents living in communities designated as “food deserts”, large geographic areas where mainstream grocery stores are scarce or missing.

Living in unhealthy food environments where fast food or unhealthy foods are more available than freshly grown foods leaves communities at risk for obesity and diabetes as well as other chronic diseases.

“We will go in the communities that are in need of fresh fruits and vegetables,” states M
