EAST POINT, Ga. -- One person was killed and four others were hurt in a wreck along Interstate 285 during Friday evening's rush hour backed up traffic for miles near Camp Creek Parkway.

Officials said that at about 5 pm, a 2001 Mercedes being driven by Brittany Stevens, 23, of Atlanta, and headed northbound on I-285 near Camp Creek Parkway, struck a 2007 Kia Sportage, which was being driven by Maria Njoku, 52, also from Atlanta.

The Sportage then struck a gold 2002 Oldsmobile Alero, which was knocked into the path of tractor trailer also traveling northbound. The tractor trailer hit the Oldsmobile broadside.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the male driver of the Oldsmobile was killed in the crash. His wife remained in surgery late Friday evening. Their identities were being withheld pending notification of family members.

Police said the GSP's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team was conducting a follow-up investigation into the accident. Charges, they said, are pending completion of the investigation.
