Teen girl struck by stray bullet tearfully remembered by family

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- A Fulton County family is mourning the death of a 16-year-old girl killed by celebratory gunfire gone wrong overnight.

The young life of Rasheeda Evans was cut short by a stray bullet while she was sitting on the couch.

Now police are looking for the source of that bullet – and the finger on the trigger – that abruptly ended an innocent life in College Park.

It was a weekend of celebration that, for one family and the surrounding community, is now a marker of tragedy they will never forget.

"She was just sitting on the couch minding her own business when the bullet came through the wall and struck her," Lieutenant Scott McBride said.

Police said that bullet came from next door – celebratory gunfire the suspected cause.

"That's a pretty terrible feeling knowing you're not safe inside your home," Lieutenant Scott McBride said. "My heart goes out to them."

Neighbors had no idea until they saw lights and sirens that something was wrong.

They would come to find that a 16-year-old girl's life had ended for no reason and far too soon.

Neighbor Geneva Jones couldn't make sense of the incident.

"They seem like very, very nice young people," she said. "They go to school and they come back and they really don't bother anybody.

And that's a thought in the back of many minds as the sun begins to go down again this holiday weekend – the realization that this stray bullet, just as easily, could have been meant for them.

Authorities are seeking 23-year-old Marcel Smith for questioning in connection with the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call Atlanta Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
