Not picked for the Peachtree? No problem ...

ATLANTA -- The winners of the 2013 AJC Peachtree Road Race lottery were chosen Monday morning.

If you weren't picked, don't despair. There are still plenty of local 10Ks, half marathons and other ways to challenge yourself between now and Independence Day.

Here are a few of the upcoming races in metro Atlanta. All of them have options that are longer than a 5K (or 3.1 miles); all start times and costs listed are for the longer races.

Fulton residents encouraged to 'Walk Ga.'

ATLANTA -- Fulton County Cooperative Extension wants all residents to develop regular physical activity habits, get healthier and have fun while “walking across Georgia”.  Daily activities such as walking the dog, going for a jog and playing catch with the kids quickly add up to virtual miles that are used to “walk” across the state.

“We invite all residents who made New Year’s resolutions to get fit and be healthier to join our initiative,” says Menia Chester, Director of Fulton County Cooperative Extension. “Although this event is called Walk Georgia, any form of activity can be logged to track mileage.  The primary goal is to get moving.”

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Although the 2012 Olympics are over, the spirit of the Games still burns bright for a young judo star from Peachtree City.

Joshua Briggs hopes to represent the U.S. at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics -- and if this past July is any indication, he is well on his way to doing just that.

Briggs, 14, placed first in the 2012 Junior Olympic International Judo Competition on July 22 in Dallas, Texas. A week later, he won the top prize in the juvenile 48 kg division at the Junior U.S. Open Judo Championship in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Briggs is ranked No. 1 in the country in his weight division. At the Junior U.S. Open, he beat his opponent in less than 25 seconds; the other judoko was ranked No. 1 in Europe while living in his native Ukraine.

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - The U.S. Olympic tennis team looks to be strong in doubles play. The roster includes sisters Serena and Venus Williams, who were chosen to extend their unbeaten streak in Olympic doubles when they seek a third gold medal in the event beginning late next month.

They will also play singles matches as well. The other women's doubles team features the top-ranked team of Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond.

On the men's side of things Andy Roddick and John Isner were selected for doubles, as were brothers Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, who won the bronze in 2008.

As expected, the U.S. roster includes first-time Olympians Ryan Harrison, Donald Young, Isner, Christina McHale and Varvara Lepchenko, an Uzbekistan native who became a U.S. citizen in September.

Falcons prepare for Minicamp

Falcons prepare for Minicamp

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga -- The OTAs are winding down at the Atlanta Falcons' headquarters in Flowery Branch.  The voluntary off season workouts have been well attended and the participation looks to be paying off.

With new Offensive and Defensive Coordinators, the team has spent the past few weeks digesting changes that are being put in place for the 2012 season.  Wide receiver Harry Douglas is glad the changes are taking place this year rather than last summer, when the NFL teams were locked out.  Douglas has spent time working special teams as a punt returner during OTAs and says "I did it some during my roookie season and fell in love with it."  It will be something to watch for during training camp.

Meanwhile, Head Coach Mike Smith was pleased with the level of participation and what the team has accomplished during the OTAs and says the upcoming Minicamp will be a continuation of what has been taking place the past few weeks.
