Falcons prepare for Minicamp

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga -- The OTAs are winding down at the Atlanta Falcons' headquarters in Flowery Branch.  The voluntary off season workouts have been well attended and the participation looks to be paying off.

With new Offensive and Defensive Coordinators, the team has spent the past few weeks digesting changes that are being put in place for the 2012 season.  Wide receiver Harry Douglas is glad the changes are taking place this year rather than last summer, when the NFL teams were locked out.  Douglas has spent time working special teams as a punt returner during OTAs and says "I did it some during my roookie season and fell in love with it."  It will be something to watch for during training camp.

Meanwhile, Head Coach Mike Smith was pleased with the level of participation and what the team has accomplished during the OTAs and says the upcoming Minicamp will be a continuation of what has been taking place the past few weeks.

"What's Happenin' in SWAT (SW ATL)..." Did you know... The 1st Annual Cascade 5K Run / Walk, sponsored by Neighborhood Planning Unit-Q (NPU-Q), takes place Saturday, May 19th at 8:30 a.m. 

The Cascade 5K is designed to provide a fun, healthy Saturday morning that encourage residents to become more involved with NPU-Q through the building of unity and pride in the Midwest Cascade neighborhood of SW ATL.  It is a FREE event limited to 100 participants of all ages.

The Cascade 5K run/walk starts at the Quailty Living Senior Services Center at 4001 Danforth Road and proceeds down Danforth Road to New Hope.  At New Hope Road it turns right onto Cascade Road proceeds down Cascade back to Danforth Road and ends at QLS.

The event winds through the beautiful Midwest Cascade neighborhood of SW ATL and will be a fun and healthy event for all ages.

ATLANTA -- You have seen them on NBC television network reality series “America’s Got Talent” and if you are a reality-show junkie, you remember them sharing  their high-energy dance experience with singer/songwriter Kandi Burruss and Attorney Phaedra Parks in connection with their travels to South Africa on BRAVO cable network top-rated reality series “Real Housewives of Atlanta”.

Now, the 19-year Atlanta-based ensemble GIWAYEN MATA, is going  to bring their ‘contagious’ high energy drum and dance to the Southwest Arts Center for Father's Day. Between educating audiences about African traditions and breaking barriers as an all-sistah ensemble in a male dominated percussion industry, its no wonder Creative Loafing Magazine named them "Best Local World Music Act" three times!

Turner Field plays host to in-state rivals Georgia and Georgia Tech

 

ATLANTA  – The tradition continues for the 10th straight year as Georgia and Georgia Tech prepare to square off in the Kauffman Tire Spring Classic for Kids on April 24 at Turner Field. The Kauffman Tire Spring Classic is one of the highest-attended regular season NCAA baseball games each year, selling more than 20,000 tickets in 2011.

 

Proceeds from the event benefit the pediatric research of the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Neurosciences Program.  Children's Neurosciences Program collaborates with other institutions to discover preventative, diagnostic and wellness strategies for children with serious medical illnesses or challenges.

The Original Harlem Globetrotters are coming to Atlanta. Before you head out for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, bring your kids to meet the Harlem Globetrotters! Greyhound is the Globetrotters official North American tour carrier and in celebration of their partnership, Greyhound Bus is giving you the opportunity to meet the team, take pictures and get their autographs.

Burdett Gym 12-under basketball team wins State Championship

Burdett Gym 12-under basketball team wins State Championship

College Park --  The Burdett Gym 12-Under Basketball Team took the 12-U Georgia Recreation and Parks Association State Championship this past weekend with a winning score of 62- 41.

The boys played in two leagues and played more than 20 games during the season to advance to the state championship held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 in Griffin, Georgia at Griffin High School.

The winning team members are: Sean Nelson, Ross Andrews, Marcus Reid Jr., Jalil Balli-Nuriddin, Jordan Farmer, Jeffery Taylor, Jamonne Williams, Jay Johnson, Georgia Haynes and Jabril Asson.  The team’s Head Coach is Mr. Bryant Conner.

Fulton County’s Parks and Recreation program produced several other winning teams that advanced to state competitions held in Savannah, Griffin and in College Park, Georgia.
